What is Accounts Payable?
Accounts Payable (AP) represents the money your business owes to customers or suppliers for products or services purchased on credit. It is the customer-side of your accounting system. In simple terms, AP helps you answer the question: “Who do we need to pay?”What AP Includes:
- Purchase Invoices & Bills: Records of bills received from your suppliers.
- Customer Payments: Records of payments you have made to satisfy your debts.
- Money We Owe Customers: The total outstanding liability to your suppliers.
- Payables Tracking: Monitoring due dates to ensure bills are paid on time and late fees are avoided.
The AP Workflow
The standard flow for Accounts Payable follows these steps:- Receive Customer Bill: A supplier sends you a bill for goods or services.
- Record Purchase Invoice: You enter the bill details into the system to track the liability.
- Pay Customer: You issue payment to the customer.
- Liability Cleared: The payment is recorded, and the outstanding balance with the customer is cleared.
